How Can a Wedding Planner Help With an At-Home Marquee Wedding in the UK?
An at-home marquee wedding can be one of the most personal and memorable ways to get married. You have the freedom to create a wedding that feels completely yours, in a place that already has meaning to you.
But there is one thing to understand about a marquee wedding: you are essentially building your wedding venue from the ground up. From the marquee itself and power supply to toilets, catering access, guest flow and a wet-weather plan, there are a lot of logistics to consider.
Then comes the really exciting part: transforming a blank canvas into a beautiful setting that reflects your story, your style and the experience you want to create for your guests. As a UK wedding planner and designer, this is one of the reasons I love marquee weddings so much. They give you an incredible amount of creative freedom, but that freedom works best when the practical planning is taken care of too.
Here is how I approach an at-home marquee wedding and how a wedding planner can help.
1. Start with a detailed site visit
Before you start thinking about flowers, tablescapes and beautiful details, you need to establish whether a marquee wedding will work on your property. A site visit is the starting point.

We look at the available space, access, ground conditions, where suppliers can load in and out, and how guests will move around the property. We also consider where the marquee could sit in relation to the house, gardens and any other areas you want to use throughout the day. From there, we can recommend suitable marquee companies and request quotes based on your guest numbers, dates and requirements.
The marquee company should also carry out their own site visit before anything is confirmed. This gives both you and your suppliers confidence that the marquee you have chosen can actually work on the site. It is much better to identify potential issues at this stage than when the marquee is arriving a few days before your wedding.
2. Choosing the right marquee style
A marquee isn't just a marquee. There are lots of different options, including:
Clear-span marquees
Frame tents
Sailcloth tents
Glass marquees
Yurt-style structures
Indian tents
The right choice will depend on your property, the space available, your guest numbers, the season and, of course, the overall look and feel you want to create. This is why it is useful to think about marquee style during the initial site visit. Your wedding planner can help you establish what could work visually and practically before approaching the right marquee companies.
We also always recommend considering the flooring carefully. A solid floor with a champagne-coloured carpet can make a huge difference. It gives you a more level and stable surface for guests, makes the space safer and instantly elevates the overall look of the marquee. It also means you aren't relying on perfectly flat ground.

3. Get the logistics right
This is the part of a marquee wedding that isn't always visible in the beautiful photographs, but it is absolutely essential to getting the day to run smoothly.
There are lots of practical questions to answer:
Where will the toilets go?
How will suppliers access the property?
Is there enough power, or will you need a generator?
Where will the catering tent be positioned?
How will caterers move between the kitchen and dining area?
Where will suppliers eat and take breaks?
Is there a suitable green room for entertainers?
Will you need to light pathways for night time?
Will you need a separate supplier tent?
Will you need heating or air conditioning?
Where will deliveries arrive and where can equipment be stored?
Some homes have suitable space inside for suppliers to use, but this isn't always practical, particularly when you have a large team working on your wedding. Your wedding planner can coordinate these requirements with the marquee company, caterer, entertainment team, venue or property owner and other suppliers so that everything works together rather than each element being planned in isolation.
4. Plan for the ceremony, drinks and a wet-weather option
There is nothing quite like an English country garden wedding on a beautiful summer's day. If you dream of saying your vows outside, followed by drinks and canapés in the garden, we love that too. But even in the middle of summer, you need a Plan B.
One option we often consider is hiring a stretch tent or another temporary structure that can be held as a wet-weather option for your ceremony and potentially your drinks reception too. Yes, there is an additional cost involved, and you may never need to use it. But having a proper plan means you don't have to make a last-minute decision if the weather changes. It also means you can protect the flow and reveal of your wedding rather than suddenly moving everything into your main marquee.
For us, a Plan B should never feel like an afterthought. It should be considered as part of the overall design.
5. Transform the blank canvas

This is where the really creative part begins. A marquee gives you a blank canvas, but the goal isn't simply to make it look beautiful. It is to create a setting that feels like your wedding. We start by getting to know you: your story, what you love, the places and experiences that have shaped you, and how you want your wedding to feel.
From there, we create a considered design proposal, using moodboards, drawings and visual references to bring the concept together. Depending on your style, this could include:
Abundant floral installations
Bespoke lighting
Draping and fabric
A statement bar
Bespoke stationery and signage
A distinctive escort card or seating display
Staging and entertainment
Special installations or details created specifically for you
A marquee gives you the freedom to be creative, but the most successful designs are the ones where every element has a reason for being there.
6. Think beyond the décor and design the guest experience
At Your Story Events, a wedding isn't just about how it looks. It is about how it feels to be there. Your guests have travelled, perhaps taken time off work, bought outfits, booked accommodation and made an effort to celebrate with you. We want them to feel well looked after and completely immersed in the experience. So we think about the whole journey.
What do guests see when they first arrive?
How are they welcomed?
How will they move from the ceremony into the drinks reception?
Could there be a hidden cocktail bar or unexpected entertainment?
What will they see when they enter the marquee for dinner?
What is the journey after dinner? Perhaps a reveal to an after party space?
These are the moments that can make an at-home wedding feel like an experience rather than just a beautiful wedding in a marquee. Creating a marquee wedding that feels like yours. This is ultimately why we love working with marquee weddings. There is so much freedom to create something completely personal, from the structure itself right through to the smallest guest detail.
We particularly love creating quintessentially English country garden celebrations, with abundant florals, thoughtful details and unexpected moments woven throughout the day. But the most important thing is that the wedding feels like you. Not a wedding that could belong to anyone else, but one where every decision has been made with your story, your people and your experience in mind.
Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an at-home marquee wedding cost in the UK?
The cost of an at-home marquee wedding can vary significantly depending on your guest numbers, marquee style, location, season and the level of production and design involved. You will also need to budget for elements such as flooring, lighting, power, toilets, catering infrastructure, furniture and potentially heating or air conditioning. At Your Story Events for an elevated marquee wedding we typically work with couples that have a starting budget of £100,000 upwards.
Do I need a wedding planner for an at-home marquee wedding?
You don't have to have a wedding planner, but an at-home marquee wedding involves considerably more logistics than getting married at an established venue. From coordinating suppliers and the marquee to managing power, catering, toilets and guest flow, there are a lot of moving parts. A planner can be a particularly valuable investment, taking care of the practicalities while also developing the design and guest experience, so you can enjoy your wedding rather than managing it.
What happens if it rains at an outdoor wedding?
A marquee wedding should always have a wet-weather plan. This might involve hiring a second structure such as a stretch tent, or creating a flexible plan that allows different areas of the property to be used depending on the weather. The important thing is to have the plan in place before the wedding day.
